2017 Essay Contest
2017 Essay Contest Guidelines
To enter the essay-writing contest, you must be a sophomore or junior in high school.
You and your parents or guardian must be served by the local electric distribution cooperative.
The essay is not to exceed two standard 8.5- by 11-inch, typewritten and double-spaced pages on the topic:
"Democracy is the foundation of our American way of life and of cooperative enterprise. The fundamentals of democracy include voter participation, political party affiliation, and public debate of issues. Describe what you think makes our current democracy strong, and provide suggestions for ways our democracy can be made stronger and more effective."
Submit your essay in hard copy or electronic format to your local electric distribution cooperative. Each participating cooperative has a contact person for the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour. Students are invited to contact their co-op for the staff person’s name and contact information. (It’s a great way to become acquainted with your co-op!) Electronic submissions should conform to the two-page, double-spaced guidelines.
A cover page must be included with the essay submission. The cover page should include: 1) your full name and date of birth, 2) name of your high school and what grade you’re enrolled in as of the fall 2016, 3) parents’ or guardian’s name, physical mailing address and phone number.
The essay contest deadline is Jan. 29, 2016.
